Evangelism + Discipleship in the Family Pt. 1

Eddy Shigley

Due to technical issues, we did not have a livestream or recorded message. However, here are some of the highlights from his message.

  • Psalm 127:3-5 “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.”

  • Family Mission Statement: “The Shigley family exists to love God, our family, and others; and to live in such a way that God is glorified and people are drawn to Him.”

Shigley Family Goals:

  • Have a growing, loving, personal relationship with Jesus Christ as modeled in John 3, John 14 and 15

  • To always remember who you are and who you represent. You are a child of God, and you are a Shigley. You represent Jesus Christ, The Shigley family, and yourself. Be an ambassador of Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:20.

  • To do your best in school, sports, music, work, “whatever you do in order to bring glory and honor to God.” Colossians 3:23 and 1 Corinthians 10:31

  • Inside of our home, we practice the Ministry of Reconciliation (making our relationship right with God and consequently with each other) and giving grace to one another. 2 Corinthians 5:18

  • To be kind and considerate of others. Putting others and their interests before yourself or your own. Romans 12

  • To be a servant leader. Leading by the example of your own life and leading by words and actions and serving others. Mark 9, Matthew 20:28, and 1 Corinthians 11:1

  • To live a life of purity and holiness. To be above reproach. The daily practice of Spiritual disciplines will guide right thinking, pure speech, and holy living. Ephesians 5:3-4 “Not even a hint…” 1 Timothy 4:12

  • To be able to give a clear presentation of the Gospel in order to lead someone to Christ, “Always be ready to give an answer for the hope that you have…” 1 Peter 3:15-16

  • To marry someone who is passionately in love with Jesus Christ. Do not be yoked with an unbeliever. Matthew 22 and 1 Corinthians 6:14-17

  • To love your wife like Christ loved the Church (boys), to respect and love your husband (girls). Be a Godly husband or wife. Eph. 5:21-33

  • To be Godly parents. Train your children to love, fear, and serve Jesus. Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child…”

  • To be involved in ministry in some capacity your entire life. Matthew 28:18-20. “Go and make disciples…”

As parents…

  • We need to be a Godly example for them.  1 Corinthians 11:1 “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ”

  • More is often caught than taught as children.

  • We have significant influence with our children.

  • We must take the time to disciple and mentor our children

Closing Scripture:

"Train yourself to be Godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." 1 Timothy 7b-8
